New Zealand
The Coach House was pleased to be associated with the Main Trunk Line centenary celebrations. The Coach House hosted model railroaders and their layouts, model engineers with their scale models of New Zealand locomotives and the prizewinning Manawatu Woodworkers who displayed and sold the product of craft.
The town was alive with events happening over Labour Weekend 2008 and the museum had several hundred visitors through the museum. A most enjoyable weekend all round.
Model Railways
The display included several layouts each with their own special features.
Model Engineers
Three model locomotives of real significance in the evolution of New Zealand Rail will be on display for the weekend.
W192
The W was the first locomotive built by the New Zealand Government Railways in their own workshops. The 2-6-2 tank engines were constructed in Addington between 1889 and 1891. After construction these locomotives were shipped north for operation on the 1 in 35 grade to the summit of the Rimutaka incline from the Wellington side. This 1/6th scale model took 16 years of effort to complete and it shows.
K915
A 1/12th scale model of NZR mighty K class 4-8-4 tender locomotive was the workhorse of the New Zealand rail system from the 1930's until the arrival of diesels in the 1960's.
WAB687
The Wab is the mainstay of the Feilding Steam Society so it is appropriate that the display includes a Wab. The NZR Wab tank locomotive was built between 1917 and 1927. A tank engine of the Ab class tender locomotive and most powerful of the tank locomotives of NZR. This model is a 1/8th scale working replica of the original.
Manawatu Woodworkers Guild
The Coach House is delighted to have the woodcrafters of the region in to show their wares and to provide visitors the opportunity to purchase some of their beautifully crafted items.
In May the club won a competition against several other clubs from the lower North Island. The theme of the competition was Kiwiana and the Manawatu team showed ingenuity and tremendous skill in assembling the winning entry. Pictured here.
The woodworkers will be applying those same attributes to their sales table. This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain handcrafted items in native timbers at reasonable prices. There is the added bonus of being able to talk to the creator of the piece.
The Northern Manawatu Club's specialty is HO scale American. Their layout measures 10 metres by 2.5 metres featuring two running lines.
European Model Railway Club
Manawatu based, the club specialises in HO scale Marklin model trains with scenery and concept based on generic European operations in Germany, Switzerland and France.
